Description:

On July, 11, 2007, Professor Douglas A. Berman shared his views on the Lewis "Scooter" Libby case and on the commutation of his 30 month federal prison sentence by President George W. Bush. His comments came at a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI). Libby was a top aide, in the White House, to V. P. Dick Cheney, who was recently convicted on four counts of perjury and obstruction of justice charges. Professor Berman argued that Bush's commutation was really "a sentencing decision that was...supspect." He said that he couldn't find any justification for it in the law. Professor Berman is on the faculty of the Moritz School of Law, at the Ohio State U. He is a recognized expert on sentencing within the federal criminal justice system.
