Description:
I recorded a long lasting red sprite display with my image intensified camera (night vision device) on the night Sep/6-7/2005. Sprites are electrical discharges that occur high above the cumulonimbus cloud of an active thunderstorm. They appear as luminous reddish-orange, neon-like flashes, last typically around 17 milliseconds, and are usually spawned by discharges of positive lightning between the cloud and the ground. Sprites usually occur in clusters of two or more simultaneous vertical discharges, typically extending from 65 to 75 km (40 to 47 miles) above the earth. Also in the video in one blue jet. To my knowledege this is the first time a blue jet was captured on video in Europe. |

wxchaser03 ::: Favorites ive already seen over 500 this year and there is no blue jet on this video. heres what you need to have sprites. cloud tops with temperatures colder -50C with total area of the region over 150,000 KM^2, reflectivity values higher that 50 dbz somewhere in the storm, most sprites occur with positive lightning with peak currents higher than 75kA. The trailing stratiform region of MCS are the best place to see them but they can occur in decaying supercells and other high convective storms. 07-06-23 00:05:16 _____________________________________________________
doodlestroodle ::: Favorites Looks to me like the blue jet is at the 44 sec mark. 07-07-07 03:08:01 _____________________________________________________
wxchaser03 ::: Favorites thats not a blue jet. it is very hard to see blue jets with low light level cameras. they are very faint and without a blue filter it is very hard. Im very sure this video does not have a blue jet in it. It can be confusing because there are sprites that are similar in structure that are called "carrot" sprites. they occur with smaller peak currents and larger impulse charge moment changes. 07-07-14 12:27:06 _____________________________________________________
MartinIrma ::: Favorites I have seen NGC twice this week having a documentary about lightning, and this footage wasn't in it. They talked about ball lightning, sprites, blue jets and elves. 07-07-24 23:34:43 _____________________________________________________

ChAoS9779 ::: Favorites Yeah, but reds weren't on it? >.< 07-07-30 02:14:39 _____________________________________________________
MartinIrma ::: Favorites Yes, they were on it. 07-07-30 10:42:29 _____________________________________________________
wxchaser03 ::: Favorites no those are all red sprites. there are no blue jets. 07-08-04 22:47:05 _____________________________________________________
06solareclipse ::: Favorites The blue jet is a 1:56. 07-08-13 17:58:39 _____________________________________________________
wxchaser03 ::: Favorites Im sorry to disapoint you but there is no blue jet at 1:56 or throughout this whole movie and im not a 15 year old that had to do a report on them. What you see is jokingly called a comb sprite, or a sprite that has a large horizontal distance with shorter vertical extending tendrils. blue jets as far as we know dont travel higher than 50 or so km while the sprite you are seeing there is probably about 70-80 km high. 07-08-13 19:03:21 _____________________________________________________ |
